I started my running journey in 1975 when running was the sole focus. Strength training was never discussed; in fact, it was considered taboo. We all feared becoming too muscular, thinking it would impede our running abilities, and even the coaches advised against it. I viewed it as something that simply kept me from hitting the road or trail.
Everything changed when I began studying to become a certified running coach and injured my Achilles tendon. Through my studies and two years of physical therapy, I started to understand and appreciate its benefits. In fact, runners are now encouraged to lift heavy weights early in their training cycles. Just like running has periodization, there's also a periodization protocol for strength training.
As I approach the end of my running journey as a senior runner, I now believe that strength training will be increasingly important for my running and even more beneficial as I transition into later stages of life.
